Equity in Every Step:
Measuring and Advancing Behavioral Health for All
Behavioral Health Equity Index (BHEI)
The BHEI was developed locally, in collaboration with community experts, to promote behavioral health equity in San Diego County. Just as a compass helps travelers stay on track by pointing them in the right direction, the BHEI can help guide policymakers, providers, advocates, and community members in their efforts to find and address behavioral health disparities.
How does the BHEI work?
The BHEI calculates a score for each community in San Diego County by summarizing factors like education, employment, and housing. In all, 30 indicators associated with behavioral health access and well-being are included in the index.
What does the BHEI score mean?
Data suggest areas with higher BHEI scores may not have access to the resources and services that promote behavioral health. These areas may serve as priority zones for equity work.
How can you provide feedback?
Data alone are not enough. Community knowledge and local priorities must inform any exploration of behavioral health equity. Click here to share your thoughts, stories, and suggestions.
